St Andrews
St Andrews is known all over the world as the home of golf, but has a great deal more to offer visitors.

St Andrews Cathedral

The town holds a special place in the history of Scotland. It takes its name from Saint Andrew, whose relics were reputedly brought to this place in early medieval times by a Greek monk. Scotland later adopted St Andrew as her patron saint and took his saltire cross for her flag.

In later centuries, the town was the centre of religious life in Scotland and the university, founded in 1410-11, is the third oldest in Britain.

Visitor attractions for the non-golfer include the castle and the cathedral, an exceptional botanic garden, a couple of local history museums, an arts centre, a modern leisure centre and a Sea-Life Aquarium. Just outside the town is Craigtoun Country Park.

The best entertainment of all, though is just to enjoy the old world atmosphere by exploring the town centre, the university quads, the pends and closes, and the harbour, or to take a stroll on one of the town's fine beaches, such as West Sands where the memorable opening scene of Chariots of Fire was filmed.
